What Is A Backlink and Why Do I Need Them?July 14, 2021
If you own a website or have been around the internet world for awhile then you have probably heard the term backlink. Do you know what a backlink is and why you need them? A backlink is an incoming link posted or created on another site resulting in a clickable link which leads back to your website. It is in every website owner’s best interest to become familiar with backlinks and how they affect your website and overall online business. To put it quite simply without backlinks your website will not succeed. Understanding how backlinks work is essential to understanding how to drive traffic to your website.
I’m assuming your website was created to be seen, right? Having a website is your opportunity to reach across the internet and communicate your message. Many websites are not able to do this because they are not visible in the eyes of the search engines. Unless a person types in your exact website URL and visits your website directly, they will need to use a search engine such as Google, Bing or Yahoo buy quality backlinks. If your website has a lot of competition, it will be almost impossible for your site to show up on the first couple of result pages without generating more backlinks than your competition. Think of each backlink as a vote for your website. The more backlinks you get, the more votes you have which means a higher probability of receiving traffic to your website. The more backlinks you generate the higher up your site will be ranked in the search engines. Search engines look at the number of links to a website and figure out your placement accordingly. In other words; the more backlinks to your site the more important the search engines view it.
I’m going to give you a few tips on how to generate quality backlinks. If you have quality content on your website on a regular basis, and I hope you do, people will want to link to you. You can also help yourself out by submitting your site to places like digg, del.icio.us, StumpleUpon and many other social bookmarking sites. I just recently happened upon a site called Social Poster. Social Poster allows you to take care of all your social bookmarking needs in one place; however it is not an automatic tool, but a central place where you coordinate your submissions; it does pre-fill most of the forms for you saving you quality time to spend elsewhere. Focus on quality content and the backlinks should come. Do not obsess about trying to have as many backlinks as possible rather focus your attention on generating quality links to your sites. Quantity can help, but quality is what really matters.
Another reason for wanting quality backlinks is to entice your visitors. For example a natural dog food company having a link on a website which caterers to selling prescriptions from Mexico will not generate that site traffic. It might be noticed by a search engine, but will not be helpful. In other words, it is much more valuable to have backlinks from sites that are related to your area of business as opposed to sites that are completely unrelated.
Nearly every major search engine considers backlinks to be an important factor in determining where your site will appear in the search engine results. Once your website becomes “popular” it is considered an authority. This is important to any website owner because your goal should be to stand out of the thousands of other websites in your field.
